The City of Salina is hiring a Utility Worker I to assist in maintaining and improving our water distribution and wastewater systems. This role involves hands-on tasks that are essential for providing reliable services to the community. Join our team and contribute to keeping Salina running smoothly!
Position Overview: As a Utility Worker I, you will perform various maintenance, repair, and installation duties related to the city's waterworks infrastructure. From handling pipelines and valves to maintaining fire hydrants and mechanical systems, this position requires problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and physical stamina.
Primary Responsibilities:
Install, repair, clean, and maintain water/wastewater pipelines.
Conduct repairs on valves, manholes, service lines, pumps, motors.
Perform maintenance on fire hydrants including installation or repair.
Carry out basic electrical or mechanical fixes as needed.
Maintain work areas by cleaning up debris or performing landscaping tasks such as mowing grass.
Set up traffic control devices like barricades for safety during job assignments.
Safely enter confined spaces using appropriate equipment when required.
Additionally:
Log completed tasks into data entry systems for recordkeeping.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED required.
Preferred: At least 2 years of experience in utility construction/maintenance/plumbing or working with mechanical systems.
Other Requirements:
Must hold a valid Kansas driver’s license with reliable transportation for quick response times (within 40 minutes of Salina).
Compensation & Benefits Package: Starting pay ranges from $24.47–$25.69 per hour ($50k–53k annually) depending on experience. Employees working night shifts (6 PM – 6 AM) receive an extra $1.50 per hour shift differential.
Additional benefits include: • Vacation time starts immediately—earn 48 hours upfront plus another 48 hours during your first year, totaling 96 hours annually.
